A Good WW1 'Swansea Pals' M.S.M., M.I.D., Meritorious Service Medal to 29237 Pte G.H. Parkin 14th Bn Welsh Regiment.
George Henry Parkin was from Port Tennant, Swansea, and disembarked France on the 2nd of December 1915 with the 14th Battalion (Swansea Pals), the Welsh Regiment.
During early July 1916 the 14th Battalion fought at the Battle of Mametz Wood, where the Battalion of 1200 officers and other ranks, lost 100 killed and another 300 wounded. By the end of WW1, the Battalion had lost 600 officers and other ranks, either killed or died of wounds, a staggering figure even for WW1.
Pte Parkin was mentioned in despatches, London Gazette 18.12.1917 refers, and he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for ‘valuable services rendered in France’, London Gazette 17.06.1918 refers. He was discharged on the 13.03.1919
The medal is mounted on a length of original ribbon, sold with a file of copied research, and is as follows -
