A WW1 2nd Battle of Cambrai, Battle of Amiens, Officer's Medal Pair awarded to Captain George Jessell Rycroft, 11th Battalion ("K" Company MGC/H), Tank Corps.
George Jessell Rycroft was born on the 4th February 1883, at Salford, Manchester, and was educated at Pembroke House School, Lytham, Lancashire. He went onto study law and qualified as a Barrister, following in his fathers footsteps.
Soon after the outbreak of the Great War, George first joined the 21st (Reserve) Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, then the 2/28th County of London Regiment (Artists Rifles), before transfering to the Heavy Branch Machine Gun Corps - London Gazette 12th February 1917 refers.
He disembarked Le Havre, France, on the 25th December 1917 with “K” Company, 11th Battalion Tank Corps, 3rd Brigade, as a Lieutenant.
“K” Company was formed from the Heavy Branch Machine Gun Corps when the Tank Corps where formed on the 27th July 1917. They fought with distinction during the 2nd Battle of Cambrai and the Battle of Amiens, where the new MK V tanks were used, along with new battle tactics that helped to turn the tide of the war in the Allies favour.
Acting Captain Rycroft relinquished his command and then commission on the 20th June 1919, and returned to life as a Barrister.
The medals are on their original lengths of ribbon, sold with a good file of copied research (including 15 pages of his Officer’s Record of Service), and are as follows -
