An Officer's WW2 'North West Europe' Gallantry M.I.D. medal group awarded to Captain William Dorrien Knowles, Royal Artillery.

William Dorrien Knowles was born on the 2nd of October, 1914.

He was commissioned from Officer Cadet to 2nd Lieutenant (O.C.T.U.) on the 16th of August 1941, joining the Royal Regiment of Artillery. He went on to serve with them during the North Africa campaigns as part of the 8th Army, then Italy and North West Europe, where he was Mentioned in Despatches for ‘galant & distinguished service’ - London Gazette 4th April 1946 refers.

An original letter from the Ministry of Defence responding to correspondence from William, dated 29th September 1982, has his address listed as 111 Queen Street, Swinton, Mexborough, South Yorkshire. It would appear that William was making enquiries about his M.I.D oak leaves.

William died during December 1995 at Rotherham, South Yorkshire.

The medals are mounted for display on original ribbons, sold with an original named letter from the M.O.D, original named M.I.D certificate, original medal slip confirming his awards and clasp, original ribbon bar M.I.D oak leaf, and are as follows -

1939/45 Star; Africa Star with original 8th Army clasp; Italy Star; France & Germany Star; Defence Medal; 1939/45 War Medal with full size original M.I.D oak leaf, all unnamed as issued.
