A WW1 Royal Navy L.S.&G.C. Casualty Medal Group & Memorial Plaque to 269973 Artificer/Engineer T.J. Battle.

Thomas James Battle was born on the 10th of April, 1878, at Deveonport, Devon, and he worked as a bolier maker prior to joing the ranks of the Royal Navy on the 1st of January, 1900.

The bulk of Thomas’ WW1 naval career was spent serving at various shore bases, but he served aboard the scout cruiser H.M.S. Sentinel between the 27th of May 1915, and the 23rd of August 1916. Sentinel spent a long period of time in the Humber area to defend against Zeppelin attacks. Thomas was awarded his L.S.&.G.C. Medal on the 21st of June, 1915.

Thomas was promoted to Artificer Engineer on the 1st of January 1915, and was then stationed at H.M.S. Vernon (Portsmouth) from the 11th of January 1918, where he served aboard the motor torpedo boat M.T.B. No. 6. Depending on what you belive online, it would appear that M.T.B. No. 6 had a strong propensity to collide with other M.T.B.’s, and other shipping!?

Thomas Battle developed Pneumonia sometime during 1918, and died from the effects on 23rd of October, 1918, and is buried at the Haslar Royal Navy Cemetery.
