£155.00

A WW1 Royal Marine Light Infantry 'Battle of Jutland' & WW2, L.S.&.G.C. Medal Group awarded to PLY 13119 Pte H.C. Dudley, Royal Marine Light Infantry.

Henry Charles Dudley was born on the 7th of June, 1886, at Blackfriars, London. He enlisted into the ranks of the Royal Marine Light Infantry, Plymouth, on the 30th of August, 1904.

Pte Dudley served aboard various ships and shore establishments prior to the outbreak of WW1. On the 22nd of November 1912, he joind the crew aboard the dreadnought battleship, H.M.S. Conqueror, where he served until the 27th of July, 1919.

On the 27th of December, 1915, during a Force 8 gale, Conqueror accidentally rammed her sister ship, H.M.S. Monarch, badly damaging her bow. She returned to Scarpa and Invergordon, and then back to Plymouth for full repairs.

On the 31st of May, 1916, Conqueror was the seventh ship from the head of the battle line at Jutland. She opened fire at 18:31 with three salvos from her main guns, at a German battleship, but with no visable effect. Conqueror then turned her attention to the crippled light-cruiser S.M.S. Wiesbaden, although the number of hits, if any, is unknown. At 19:12 she again fired her main guns at enemy destroyers, without result, and again at 19:25, with her aft guns. In total, conqueror fired 57 twelve inch shells during the battle.

During WW2, Pte Dudley was shore based, serving at H.M.S. Osprey, Attack, and the Plymouth Division.

The medals are mounted for wear, sold with some copied research, and are as follows -

1914/15 Star, PLY. 13119, PTE. H.C. DUDLEY, R.M.L.I; British War & Victory Medals, PLY 13119 PTE. H.C. DUDLEY. R.M.L.I.; 1939/45 Defence & War Medals, unnamed as issued; G.V. Royal Navy Long Service & Good Conduct Medal, PLY **119. H. C. DUDLEY. PRIVATE R.M.L.I.

Condition, WW1 trio & L.S.&.G.C., lightly polished, L.S.&.G.C., part of the service number has been crudely erased with wear to part of the rim of the medal (possibly re-named, but it looks unlikely), thus good fine, the rest, very fine and better.
