William Edgar Hingston was born at Torquay, Devon on 18 March 1884, he was an errand boy before he enlisted into the Royal Navy on 18 March 1902. He was serving aboard Temeraire at the start of the Great War and remained on her until 27 August 1915. Hingston then served aboard Vernon from 28 August 1915 until joining Defiance on 24 January 1916. He then briefly served on Vivid between 6 February 1916 and 21 February 1916 when he joined Drake, before returning to Vivid on 14 October 1917. Hingston then returned to Defiance briefly on 3 January 1918 and then to Hecla II on 29 January 1918, from whence he went aboard Vivid on 3 April 1918 before his final posting to Gibraltar on 1 July 1918. He left her on 30 November 1918, completing his Great War service. He remained with the Royal Navy and was awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal in February 1924 before being Shore Pensioned on 17 March 1924, joining the Royal Fleet Reserve the following day. Hingston was finally demobilised on 4 October 1938 and died in 1973.
